Why do bad things happen to good people?

“Why do bad things happen to good people?” This question has plagued the human mind since forever. It is one of the hard questions to answer. This question turns people away from faith and from God. “Well, if there were a God, he wouldn’t let those horrible things happen.”

The Bible answers this question over and over again, we just might not recognize it. We see countless examples of awful deeds people commit, yet if they turn their hearts to God, he shows his redemptive grace and restorative power.

One profound example is in Psalm 107. Over and over again, King David gives examples of those suffering, and he explains why they are suffering. “(10) Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains, (11) for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.” (NIV)

Sometimes God allows bad things to happen, it’s as simple as that. But, there is hope! Just look a few verses later in Psalm 107. “(17) Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. (18) They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. (19) Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.” (NIV)

These people actually brought the hardship on themselves, ‘Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.’ Iniquity means immorality, or grossly unfair behavior.

But once these people realized they needed God’s help to fix their problems, they cried out to Him and God indeed helped them. ‘Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.’

Once you realize you need God in every aspect of your life, He won’t fix everything, but leaning on him for support and guidance will make the hard times easier.

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

There is a part we have to play in the deliverance of our strife, our neighbor’s strife, and our nation’s strife. If we humble ourselves, if we pray, if we seek His face, AND if we turn from our wicked ways, THEN He will hear our prayers, forgive our sin, AND heal our land. Cause and effect.

Life will never be perfect, but living in God’s Word makes each day new and exciting.
